What is the Microbiome?

The human body is home to a great number of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeast. The number of these microorganisms actually out-number the quantity of our own human cells, playing a crucial role in the maintenance of our wellbeing.

These communities of microorganisms reside in multiple locations around our bodies including the mouth, digestive tract, skin and vagina.

Whilst the digestive microbiome is the most talked about, our bodies cannot function optimally without healthy communities of microorganisms in all of these regions of the body. These regions may be physically separate, but they are heavily influenced by the digestive microbiome because this is where a majority of these living organisms dwell.

Most of the microorganisms of the gut have beneficial properties, but under certain conditions, these microorganisms can become pathogenic and lead to dis-ease. Every person has their own unique microbiome that is influenced by genetics, environment, nutrition, lifestyle and even emotion. It is for this reason that we like to take an individual approach when supporting our patients in achieving optimal health.
