Conveniences of modern society mean that most of us spend majority of our day indoors - in our homes, at work, and in our cars.
When we are disconnected from the elements, our energy and vitality declines.
Restoring our connection with elements of the natural world - earth, water, fire, air, and space play a major role in the process of healing.
Earth: Holds the qualities of stability, calmness, solidity, strength, and nurturance. It helps us feel more stable, grounded, and calm.
Water: The water element is cooling, soothing, and flowing. Its moisture is life sustaining.
Fire: Carries qualities of heat, light, and transformative power. The sun is a ball of fire; its heat, light, and energy are the powerhouse behind the growth and development of all life on earth.
Air: Holds the qualities of movement and lightness. It circulates, carrying a wide variety of airborne particles and substances, including negative ions from water spray, fragrances, pollens, and, of course, OXYGEN.
Space: The essence of stress is feeling constrained with limited options. Space is the very opposite of limitations; it is by definition open and limitless. It holds and contains all the other elements and is the place where all five elements come together.
Fortunately, most of us can find a bit of nature right outside our door, providing the silence and awe that allow us to slow down and engage our senses.
I am most fortunate to have my own personal forecaster of the elements. He is 83, he has dementia, he rises each morning, he opens the door (in his singlet & jocks), he says ‘Kaliméra’ (good morning in Greek) to the world, he checks the elements, he dresses and walks by the ocean (with his wife - the love of his life), HE is my Dad.
Find the joy and beauty in the simplicity of this photo - may it bring a smile to your face (a giggle even), and warmth to your heart.
When we honour the rituals that are a part of our daily life, we will no longer feel like we are out of our element.
